LANSING, MI – – Bills signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer prevent a person’s property from being permanently seized by police without being convicted of a crime.
Whitmer signed Senate Bill 2 and House Bills 4001 and 4001, which each passed both chambers of the Michigan Legislature with broad bipartisan support. Before the reforms were signed, law enforcement agencies could permanently take a person’s private property if they suspect it had been connected to a controlled substance violation, regardless of whether the person is charged with a crime.
